Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs must be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
